for ‘disco club’ (1978) i worked with a drummer making loops that were adjusted, to create the hypnotic groove that is so special. despite the fact that it was all recorded in a professional studio (in a suburb of paris) i find this a very ‘artisan’ disk because it was all done using equipment that we now consider “home studio”. my producer, jacky giordano and i chose to use nicknames for the credits: he would be ‘joachim sherylee’ and i would be ‘junior claristidge’. as for black devil, that was the end result of this change: an extension of me, a new character. - bernard fevre, 2015

louie vega re-ignites the disco classic “dance (disco heat)” by sylvester grammy awarding winning producer & 5 time grammy nominated louie vega continues to send dance floors into a peak hour frenzy with his remixes of disco classics on nervous records. the inspiration to delve into masters from this era began when he started remixing masters from the sam records catalogue, which is owned by nervous records, and with whom louie has a long history going back to nervous early 90’s origins. louie is that unique producer who has had success in multiple genres of music including house, r&b, & freestyle and he has brought that talent to help re-ignite new york disco classics like vicky d’s -this beat is mine- and convertion’s -let’s do it- featuring leroy burgess, as well as charting topping disco hits from john davis & the monster orchestra -bourgie bourgie- & -up jumped the devil-. this time, louie put his focus on a track outside of the sam records catalogue, and one that was an international disco hit that also crossed over to becoming a 1978 pop hit, namely sylvester / dance (disco heat). using elements from the 1978 version and combining them with his own original musical and percussion contributions, along with new vocal performances from renowned singer cindy mizelle, louie has refashioned and reignited this 39 year-old production into a 2018 club anthem.

house music maestro louie vega returns to nurvous to remix disco hit ‘up jumped the devil’ by john davis & the monster orchestra. originally released in 1977 on sam records, ‘up jumped the devil’ featured music performances from some of philly’s finest musicians, many of whom also featured on albums by the salsoul orchestra. among them were michael “sugar bear” foreman on bass, drummer charles collins and guitarist dennis harris. percussion came from larry washington, whilst don renaldo provided the strings and horns. with a rugged and rough rhythm section and blazing horn parts, the track was an absolute bomb amongst disco djs at the time and continues to shine as a gem today.

following the success of ‘ride’ with miss kittin, eminent sci+tec founder dubfire returns with another chaos-conjuring techno composition. previously the sole-preserve of his epic sense-blurring hybrid show, dubfire is finally unleashing ‘dust devil’… his first solo release in several years, ‘dust devil’ is all about precision momentum. a move that dubfire’s made his signature, you can physically feel movement and destination throughout. especially as we reach the short breakdown where the riff revolves faster and higher, providing space for the echoed stabs that whirl and twist around you intensely. as the drums re-ignite, the riff is suddenly converted into groove energy as the jack-minded persistence brings the elements back together with pure focus. this is what ali has to say… “this was an instrumental i had done that i wasn’t quite sure what to do with. it wasn’t strong enough for a lead single and it always felt as though there was something missing, perhaps a spoken or sung vocal. so i sort of put it out of my mind until it was time to compile the music for the hybrid show back in the summer of 2013. once i had the backbone of the set list, along with the visual look, there seemed to be a more defined mood and look. and when i happened upon this track again it seemed to have been tailor-made for this show. it was also nice to insert something no one had heard before to break things up a bit.

disco club is a groundbreaking 1978 ep of experimental electronic disco created by fvre and his collaborator under their tongue-in-cheek aliases joachim sherylee and junior claristidge. the aphex twin-backed rephlex label notably reworked a handful of disco club tracks in 2004, however this is the first ever reissue of the ep in its complete, originally intended sequence. so synonymous is fvres career with this release, he continues to perform internationally as black devil disco club today. an impossibly rare piece, this edition has been treated to a remaster from the original tapes by fvre himself.
